a series of film screenings at the Writers Centre

main feature every Tuesday at 7pm
*short film to precede main feature at 6.30pm

We are very pleased to announce the 2nd film in the series of film screenings at the Writers Centre, showing films that have been taken from novels.

The main feature will start each Tuesday at 7pm sharp.
There will a short introduction about the novel and the director and there can be some discussion after the event.

We also seek to precede all main features with a short film from an unknown or emerging director. So, if you have a short film you would like to screen please email me with details.

A Separate Peace
Director Hind Metwalli - based on the novel by John Knowles

Gene and Finny are roommates and friends at a prestigious New England boarding school. Gene is a lonely, introverted intellectual who has ambitions of becoming valedictorian. However, his efforts to study are constantly thwarted by carefree, extroverted, athlete Finny. It is the year 1942, and with WWII raging around them, the boys have managed to create a safe haven from the harsh reality of war. However, this sanctuary is threatened when Gene begins to suspect that Finny’s distractions are a conscious effort to sabotage him.

Hind Metwalli graduated from the American University in Cairo with a Bachelor’s in Political Science. She then went on to study Film Production at the New York Film Academy and the University of Southern California. She currently lives in Cairo, Egypt and is working on an upcoming feature film project.

Director Tran Anh Hung - taken from the novel of the same name by Haruki Murakami

Haruki murakami's bestselling novel is brought to the screen by tran anh hung (golden lion winner for cyclo and academy award nominee for The Scent Of Green Papaya and features Japanese rising star Kenichi Matsuyama (Death Note, Detroit Metal City) and Oscar nominee Rinko Kikuchi (Babel) alongside newcomer Kiko Mizuhara.
Tokyo, the late 1960s... Students around the world are uniting to overthrow the establishment and Toru Watanabe's personal life is similarly in tumult. At heart, he is deeply devoted to his first love, Naoko, a beautiful and introspective young woman. But their complex bond has been forged by the tragic death of their best friend years before. Watanabe lives with the influence of death everywhere.
