Winter News

Dear All

It seemed easier to write a blog post dealing with this winter's plans and then I can refer people to it in any correspondence when I am asked :)

So.  Here is the plan!

I shall be in UK from mid November and my main business focus is to establish two websites - working with my long term friend and professional collaborator David Lanni of WildBlue Creative.

One website will be for putting my Creative Writing courses online so that all and any interested people can download courses and have online learning with a variety of text, audio and video exercises and other materials to enable a satisfactory student experience.  This site will also have free areas, members' areas, a user forum, Skype and many other features.

The other website will be for my Creative Writing holidays/retreats which till now have been running successfully in a variety of beautiful and inspiring locations within Egypt.  The plan is to expand these writing holidays to an international arena; offering a variety of Creative Writing holidays/retreats in locations such as Florence, Tuscany, south of France, Crete, St Petersburg, Cornwall and many more .. and.. also (of course!) still Egypt  :)

Whilst in UK I will also be teaching an online Creative Writing one hour class once a week for a group organised via LaYinka Sanni, a writing teacher/editor in London.  And I shall be working on editing a novel for at least one Egyptian private student who has a terrific book in the making and we shall work via emails and Skype if and when necessary etc.


And, those of you based in Egypt and reading this may be asking, 'But when will you be back?'.  I have hopes to start Creative Writing courses again at several Diwan bookstores and my other courses at various venues in Cairo and wider Egypt in early 2015.  Once I have got started on my immediate winter plans building the websites I shall be able to give definite times and information of  return plans.

Writing Retreat in Siwa - A Place of Beauty Beyond

I got back a few days ago from the Siwa writing retreat and what a splendid, inspiring, beautiful and peaceful experience it was!  The landscape is sublime, reminding me of outback Australia, of Balinese jungles, of storybook magical places existing out of time and space.  And from the moment I stepped foot upon Siwa's ground my worries and anxieties were lifted, taken from me and I became carefree and rested.

The group consisted of 5 writers; Mirette, Bahira, Hanaa, Nadine and Noura and myself, the tutor, of course as the 6th.  Each day we had writing class in several fabulous locations, cultural/historical tours to amazing places steeped in story such as the Oracle of Amun and Shali old village.  We had our meals, market shopping for handicrafts, drinking juices and teas by sunset lakes, chatting, laughing, night swims under the full moon and looking at the stars.  Part of the beauty of the trip was the interchange of ideas, friendships, shared moments and smiles - also not least enjoying the creativity and skills of the group's writing. I shall compile the narratives of Siwa into a collection; 'Voices of Siwa' for instance - a collection of monologues by fictional Siwan characters and also a collection of landscape pieces and mythical Siwan beasts!

I fully intend to return to Siwa and offer a number of writing retreats there; the next will most probably be in March 2015 - and I will be offering a number of writing retreats worldwide - so stay tuned to this and other news!  :)

So.. I have just received my 4th request from a person who wants exactly that! And I didn't even advertise it yet!! I love it when plans work in tandem with the market demand like that!

we also work on several key topics each week such as contemporizing myth in writing,

symbolism and surrealism, writing creative non fiction and

strengthening editing skills by working on review and critique

Tuesday October 7th

10pm - Pick up and transfer to Siwa via Matrouh overnight.

Cairo to Siwa is about 9 hours' drive.

Wednesday October 8th -Day 1

Arrive at Matrouh around 4am

Rest in Matrouh for about 1 hour.

Drive in the desert road to Siwa, arrive in Siwa around 9am

Check in the hotel and rest.

Lunch at Cleopatra spring. About 10 minutes' drive from the hotel.

Writing workshop in the cafe at Cleopatra spring . Private atmosphere.

Enjoy swimming in the spring in the afternoon and free time.

Back to the hotel.

Dinner and night stay in Siwa.

Day 2

Breakfast

Writing workshop in the morning at the hotel.

Visit Siwa House museum. (The tour duration is about 45 minutes)

Lunch at Abdou Restaurant.

Visit Siwa historical sightseeing such as The Mountain of the Dead and Alexander temple (Oracle temple). (The tour duration is about 3 hours)

Late afternoon: Visit Almaza camp on the shore of the salt lake and enjoy Rigwa fresh water spring, during the sun set.

Back to the hotel and dinner.

Night stay in Siwa.

Day 3

Breakfast

Writing workshop in the morning at the hotel.

Lunch

2 pm start your desert adventure in the western desert using 4x4 car.

Visit the Silica rocks, the fossils, skiing on the sand dunes using sand boards, the cold water lake, Bier 1 hot spring, then boarding on the sand dunes and watch the sun set.

Back to Siwa.

Dinner and night stay in the hotel at Siwa.

 Day 4

Breakfast

Writing workshop in the hotel.

12 pm: Travel from Siwa to Cairo.

Picnic lunch

Stop at El Almeen Sidi Abdelrhman old hotel. Has the most beautiful bay on Egypt's Mediterranean. Drinks and orders are not included in the price.

Travel back to Cairo, arrive around 10pm.

End of the service.

News! Courses in Cairo, Siwa and a new Writers' Cruise Luxor to Aswan and Abu Simbel!

Dear Writers, how are you all? I've been away for some time and have more weeks to go as I will travel to Berlin and Paris later next week; I have some spoken word performances in Berlin which I am excited about!

I'm pleased to let you know that I am building up the Creative Writing holidays for autumn; we will begin when the sun retreats a little and I am currently developing a 4 day Siwa Oasis trip - let us call it for now: 'Breathing in the Garden Star' and another Writers' Cruise, possibly of 5 days,: 'In Search of the Blue Lotus' which will be Luxor to Aswan and on to Abu Simbel! Actual details, dates, prices and all information will be in some weeks The program of trips will start from late September/early October.

And I am looking forward to delivering more Creative Writing courses back in Cairo at Diwan Bookstores from middle of August onwards.  All adverts and details in a few weeks time!

Ithaca and Beyond! A 2 day Creative Writing Holiday in Alexandria, Egypt

After the brilliant success of the recent Writers' Cruise Luxor to Aswan, I am very pleased to be able to introduce another fabulously inspiring Creative Writing Holiday.

This time we will take a 1 night/2 day stay in Alexandria and we have a fantastic itinerary to present to you:

2 day Creative Writing Holiday

Alexandria, Egypt

Ithaca is the famous poem written by the poet and writer CP Cavafy who lived in Alexandria from 1863 to 1933. He was greatly inspired by the city and all its tales; ancient and modern and this inspiration lives on in this historic coastal city.

Over a 2 day trip we shall visit Cavafy's house, now a museum, and many other wondrous locations such as the Roman Catacombs, the National Museum, Roman amphitheatre, Montaza Palace and Gardens and you shall have 6 hours of Creative Writing instruction within a class on each day where we shall look at writing our own Ithacas and developing narrative inspired by the location, its present and its history.

Price per person 1100 LE

includes 6 hours of writing tuition, return transfers and transits in Alexandria in a private bus, 1 night's accommodation, several meals, all tours, guide and entry fees.

Day 1. Friday June 20^th

6am: pick up from Cairo and drive to Alexandria in a private air conditioned bus

Arrive in Alexandria and visit the following attractions:

Pompey’s pillar, The Catacombs of Kom Elshoqafa, Cavafy house museum

Noon: Check in at hotel. Lunch and rest

3-6 pm: Creative Writing class 1

6:30 pm, leaving for a city tour and dinner

Drive along the Cornish via Ramlah station and stop at Abu El Abbass mosque

Dinner at a fish restaurant in Bahari

Stop at Qait Bay fort and dessert from Azza famous ice-cream shop

Transfer back to the hotel around 10pm

Night stay in Alexandria.

Day 2. Saturday June 21^st

Writers' Cruise Luxor to Aswan - a True Love Letter to the Nile

I organised a a Writing Cruise from Luxor to Aswan from May 12th to 16th and it was fabulous!  A true love letter to the Nile and an inspiration beyond the beyond.
 
It was a fantastic itinerary of temple tours in the mornings and daily writing class in the afternoons, cruising along the inspirational waters of the Nile on a 5 star boat, the Nile Smart, with accommodation and meals all included.

Short Story Course with Linda Cleary

For those who completed the 4 week Creative Writing course or who have proven writing skills.

This course focuses on work on character, voice, atmosphere, plot and building story and we continue with further creative writing expansion techniques.

We also read published short stories for discussion and understanding format, focusing on the necessary elements for each student to produce a final draft of a 1000 word narrative.

4 weeks (8 hr course)

once a week on Mondays starting 19^th May

from 7.30pm to 9.30pm

at Diwan Zamalek

Creative Writing Course with Linda Cleary

The Creative Writing course acts as an extended masterclass looking at various techniques and exercises to open up and improve writing skills, work with metaphor and imagery, create texts and narratives to given themes and word counts as well as free writing.

There is no criteria other than a willingness to open up one's writing; the course is designed that people of varying writing experience can participate and each draw their individual benefits.

4 weeks (8 hr course)

once a week on Tuesdays starting 20th May

from 7.30pm to 9.30pm

and

once a week on Saturdays starting 24^th May

from 7pm to 9pm

at Diwan Heliopolis

Itinerary

Monday:

Arrive to boat at Luxor by 9am

Morning: Karnak and Luxor temple

Afternoon: Writing class (3 to 6 pm)

Evening entertainment

Tuesday:

Morning: West bank visit - Valley of the Kings and Queen Hatshepsut temple.

Afternoon: Writing class (3 to 6 pm)

Boat sails Tues night

Wednesday

Morning: Edfu visit

Afternoon: Writing class (3 to 6 pm)

Boat arrives Aswan late evening

Thursday

Morning: High dam, obelisk and Philae temple

Afternoon: Writing class (3 to 6 pm)

Evening entertainment

Friday

depart boat at Aswan by 1pm

*Breakfast time depends on visits. Lunch at 1 pm and Dinner 7 pm.

*The writing course is 10 hrs in total and will be given as 2 and ½ hours of tuition each day within the 3 hr class time.

*Your Writers' Cruise payment of 1900 LE is based on per person sharing a twin room with ensuite bathroom (including full board basis (meals), visits, writing course and evening entertainment) and excluding airfares, beverages, tips and hotel transfers to and from the boat to airport (extra 80 LE per person).

* Name of the boat is Nile Smart.

*Recommended first flight on Monday 12^th May (Cairo-Luxor) and a noon flight Friday 16^th May (Aswan-Cairo).
